Padres mid-game report: Errors haunt, Myers headed on rehab assignment

SAN DIEGO-- After Christian Villanueva hit a two-run home run to give the Padres a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, San Diego committed two errors and gave up five runs in an ugly top of the third.

The inning began with Villanueva failing to backhand a ground ball, which allowed Chris Taylor to reach second base. The next batter, Corey Seager, hit a line drive to right field. RF Hunter Renfroe took an awkward route to the ball, and it wound up deflecting off his glove and rolling all the way to the wall. The play allowed Taylor to score and Seager to reach third. After Kike Hernandez and Cody Bellinger both singled, Matt Kemp hit a three run home run to make the score 6-2.

Needless to say, it was an ugly and frustrating inning for the Padres on the defensive end.

One inning later, Jose Pirela committed the Padres' third error of the night; dropping a routine fly ball.

San Diego currently trails 6-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Myers to head on rehab assignment

Wil Myers, who has been on the 10-day DL with nerve irritation in his right elbow, is set to begin a rehab assignment with the Lake Elsinore Storm tomorrow. The plan is for him to be ready to go for the Arizona series, which starts on Friday.
