SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Diego has played, and lost, nine games against the San Francisco Giants this season and five have been by one run.
"It's really frustrating to lose games like this," Padres infielder Yangervis Solarte said. "The only silver lining, if you can call it that, is we're losing the close ones. It's still hard when you do."
Solarte's two-run homer off Josh Osich in the eighth inning tied the game but Brandon Crawford singled in Matt Duffy with two outs in the 10th, and the surging Giants beat the Padres 4-3 on Wednesday for their 13th win in 14 games.
"Yeah it's frustrating," Padres starter James Shields said. "We're in a bad stretch and we need to figure out how to get out of this."
Duffy singled off Brad Hand (1-2) with one out, pinch-hitter Hunter Pence popped out, Duffy advanced on a wild pitch and Crawford hit a 1-2 offering over center fielder Jon Jay as Duffy scored standing up.
"Any loss is tough," Padres manager Andy Green said. "Shields threw the ball well again and the bullpen was solid. Hand, I'm sure, would maybe like the pitch back to Crawford."
The Padres are 4-12 overall in one-run games, including 0-5 against the Giants.
"If you want to play winning baseball and get to the playoffs you have to find a way to win these games," Shields said. "We're not getting it done."
The NL West-leading Giants' two walkoff wins in the series were against Hand as last-place San Diego was swept for the fourth time this season.
The Padres stranded runners on the corners in the 10th and lost for the eighth time in 10 games.
"It's momentum based. Once you start winning those games, you start expecting to win them," Green said. "The Giants have done it against us. They take championship-caliber swings when they have the opportunity."
George Kontos (1-1) retired two batters.
Giants starter Jake Peavy, who spent his first eight seasons with San Diego, allowed one run and six hits in 6 2/3 innings and left after Alexei Ramirez's RBI single in the seventh.
Shields, who struck out six, gave up two runs and five hits in six innings with one walk.
FINDING THE POWER
Solarte has three hits over his last eight at-bats after going hitless in his first nine at-bats since coming off the DL on Saturday. He hit his first home run of the season Wednesday.
"There are small mistakes that lose the game in close ones," Solarte said. "I'm happy I can lift the team but it's not just the home run. I want to help any way I can. Things happen in a game. I know we have the talent and the potential to come out of it."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Padres: INF Will Myers (forearm) drew a leadoff walk as a pinch hitter in the 10th and was pulled for a defensive replacement in the bottom half. The Padres have been giving Myers extended rest this week in hopes of avoiding placing him on the DL.
Giants: OF Denard Span was supposed to have the day off but came in as a defensive replacement in the top of the seventh. ... Pence (hamstring) hopes to be in the starting lineup Friday at Colorado.
UP NEXT
Padres: LHP Christian Friedrich (0-1) is to start the series opener in Arizona on Friday. The former first-round draft pick by Colorado is winless since going 5-8 in his rookie year of 2012.
