Paul Goldschmidt ranks third among all NL players in all-star voting
The final updates in balloting for the Major League All-Star Game were released Monday, and with three days left in the voting, Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has now nearly doubled the vote total of his closest challenger, Adrian Gonzalez of the Dodgers.
Goldschmidt has 7.34 million votes -- behind only Bryce Harper and Buster Posey among National League players. Gonzalez is far behind at 3.68 million votes.
Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock remains outside of the top 15 vote-getters in the outfield, despite some All-Star worthy statistics. Pollock's best chance could come Sunday night, when reserves are selected in player balloting and by manager Bruce Bochy.
The current leaders in the NL are Goldschmidt, Posey, second baseman Dee Gordon, shortstop Jhonny Peralta, third baseman Matt Carpenter and outfielders Harper, Giancarlo Stanton and Matt Holliday. The closest voting is at third base, where Cincinnati's Todd Frazier has crept within 63,000 votes of Carpenter.
In the American League, voting for five starting positions are headed by Kansas City Royals: Salvador Perez, Omar Infante, Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon. The other AL leaders are Miguel Cabrera, Josh Donaldson, Mike Trout and Nelson Cruz. Cruz leads Kansas City's Kendrys Morales by 205,000 votes, while Infante leads Houston's Jose Altuve by 232,000 votes.
