ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers added another left-hander to the bullpen Friday by calling up Andrew Faulkner from Triple-A Round Rock.
The Rangers sent Nick Martinez, who was called up yesterday to serve as the long man, back to Round Rock where he was expected to start Friday night.
Faulkner has been dominant since moving from the rotation to the bullpen at Double-A Frisco. Since he was promoted to Round Rock, Faulkner hasn't allowed a run and has 13 strikeouts in eight innings of work. He's allowed just two hits and left-handers in the Pacific Coast League were 0 for 9 against him with seven strikeouts.
Faulkner made 15 starts this season for Frisco before getting shifted to the bullpen.
"Fastballs inside for strikes," Faulkner said of the reason for his bullpen success. "Coming from a lefty a lot of lefties like to go away and for some reason I've always liked to throw in. That's the thing that's surprised a lot of right-handers I've faced. Somehow even if I fall behind somehow it's getting int there enough to pop up or not get to it very well."
Texas manager Jeff Banister now has three left-handed options in relief as Faulkner joins Jake Diekman and Sam Freeman. Banister doesn't plan on looking for low-leverage situations to get him going either.
"I don't think this is time where you ease guys into anything," Banister said. "We're as close to September as we can get and in the heat of things."
