Robbie Keane undergoes knee surgery, will return for Euros
The LA Galaxy will be without their talisman for at least a month after Robbie Keane underwent knee surgery. The operation was a success and the club said Keane would return in 4-6 weeks.
There is no confirmation of when exactly Keane was injured or even what type of injury he suffered to his knee. Reports out of Ireland claimed that Keane arrived in Dublin to play with the national team, but never even trained because of his problematic knee before being sent back to the Galaxy.
It will be difficult for the Galaxy to weather Keane's absence simply because of how good he is and how much he means to the team, but the timing is about as good as it could be for LA. Giovani dos Santos is returning from injury and will be able to take up a forward's role, while Gyasi Zardes is back from international duty. The Galaxy have also gotten quality play from Mike Magee in the early part of the season and could use Emmanuel Boateng for additional pace, not to mention Alan Gordon for physicality. Few teams in MLS have the forward depth that the Galaxy do.
The Republic of Ireland will be relieved that Keane will be back within six weeks. That ensures he will be fit for the start of their training camp ahead of this summer's Euros. What's more, he should even get a couple matches in with the Galaxy first, so he can find a bit of sharpness.
