Royals activate LoCain from DL, send Eibner back to Omaha
Maybe LoCain's return will be the spark the Royals need.
Kansas City reinstated center fielder Lorenzo Cain from the disabled list Friday. He had been sidelined since suffering a left hamstring strain June 28 but will be active for the team's game at Texas on Friday night.
In a corresponding move, the Royals optioned outfielder Brett Eibner to Triple-A Omaha.
Cain, 30, gives the Royals a player with MVP-caliber credentials. A 2015 starting All-Star, Cain finished third in the AL MVP voting while hitting .307 with 16 homers, 72 RBIs and 28 stolen bases while flashing a tremendous glove in center field.
Cain was batting .290 with eight homers and 39 RBIs when he injured the hamstring while trying to leg out a hit.
Cain had been on a short rehab assignment with Omaha, going 3 for 8 in two games with the Storm Chasers.
Cain won't be able to do anything about the team's struggling starting rotation, but he could inject some life into a sluggish offense. The Royals have slipped to 49-52, nine games behind Cleveland in the AL Central and 6 1/2 games out of a wild card spot.
