Royals' Alex Gordon leaves game with scary groin injury
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon left Kansas City's game against Tampa Bay on Wednesday night with a strained left groin after taking an awkward step near the wall.
Gordon was racing back on Logan Forsythe's flyball in the fourth inning when his left leg twisted gruesomely near the warning track. He collapsed to the ground and lay there as Forsythe rounded the bases for an inside-the-park homer.
Gordon remained on the field as trainer Nick Kenney and manager Ned Yost jogged out from the dugout. He eventually was lifted onto the back of a cart and driven off the field through a gate in the right-field bullpen, his head covered by a towel.
The severity of the injury and how long Gordon might be out were not known. He was scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday night.
The four-time Gold Glove winner was voted to his third straight All-Star Game last weekend. He was supposed to start for manager Ned Yost on Tuesday night in Cincinnati.
Gordon has been the Royals' hottest hitter the past week. He had seven hits, reached base eight times and drove in six runs in Tuesday's doubleheader sweep of the Rays.
Jarrod Dyson replaced Gordon in left field. Moments later, Dyson threw out the Rays' Brandon Guyer as he tried to score from third base on a flyout.
