Royals rally, squirrel appears -- but a Rally Squirrel? Probably not
The St. Louis Cardinals had their Rally Squirrel in 2011, when they won the World Series. The Kansas City Royals can only hope for similar results.
A black squirrel spent several minutes on the Comerica Park field in the eighth inning of Thursday's Royals-Tigers game, by which point the Royals had rallied from a 6-3 deficit to tie the game at 6 an inning earlier.
In the bottom of the eighth, the squirrel made a couple of appearances -- and the game was delayed for only part of the time. It scurried near the Royals' dugout, then across the infield and into the Tigers' dugout. Royals reliever Wade Davis then went back to work against Anthony Gose.
But with a 2-2 count on Gose, the squirrel ran back onto the field, and though left fielder Ben Zobrist tried to chase it away, it hung around the outfield. Davis resumed pitching even while the rodent ran along the warning track, finally escaping into the bullpen.
Davis struck out Gose to end the inning. When action resumed in the top of the ninth, the squirrel was still basking in the sun near the top of the Royals' dugout.
