Royals sign top pick Finnegan, will start him at Class A Wilmington
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- There will be very little rest for Royals top pick Brandon Finnegan, a left-hander from TCU who recently concluded his college career by pitching in the College World Series.
Finnegan was here Saturday as the Royals officially introduced him to the media after signing him to the slotted bonus amount at No. 17, which is $2,200,600.
From here, Finnegan is expected to head to Class A Wilmington, the Royals' advanced-A team where he will join other top pitching prospects Miguel Almonte, Sean Manaea and Christian Binford.
"I think we want to get him going right now," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "We'll start him in Wilmington and not put any limitations on him."
There likely will be an innings limitation, however.
"We'll monitor it week to week, month to month," Moore said. "He just had a very intense year and he pitched a lot this spring, but we want to get him going and transition him to professional baseball."
Finnegan, 21, said he really only has one goal the rest of this season.
"Make it as high as I possibly can," he said.
