Russia's Kulizhnikov wins opening 500 in World Cup event

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Russia's Pavel Kulizhnikov won the opening 500-meter race Friday in a World Cup speedskating event, finishing in 34.11 seconds.

Finland's Mika Poutala was second at 34.28, and Canada's William Dutton followed in 34.46.

Sven Kramer of the Netherlands won the 5,000 in 6:08.61. Teamate Jorrit Bergsma followed in 6:10.44, and Canada's Ted-Jan Bloemen was third in 6:12.72.

South Korea's Lee Sang-hwa won the women's 500 in 36.96. China's Zhang Hong was second in 37.18, followed by Americans Brittany Bowe in 37.22 and Heather Richardson in 37.29.

Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic took the women's 3,000 in 3:57.21. Irene Schouten of the Netherlands was second in 3:58.39.
