San Diego Buzz: The summer is almost over, fall sports are coming

As the last few days of August approach, it's time to enjoy the last weekend of meaningless football because for the next five months we'll all be glued to the TV every football Saturday and Sunday. Yes, prep football begins tonight around San Diego, but in terms of wasting weekends in doors in beautiful SD because college and pro football will be on all weekend from Sep. to Jan., now is the time to get out and enjoy the outdoors, aside from catching the Padres in Philadelphia of course.

Thursday night marked the end of an amazing run by Sweetwater Valley Little League in Williamsport. The team representing the West from Bonita, CA. lost in the U.S. semifinals to Texas in an extra innings thriller. Despite the heartbreaking loss, it's safe to say all of southern California is proud of these kids. And another thing for the region to be proud of, the Little League team from Mexicali, just a little over 100 miles away from Sweetwater Valley, is playing the International Championship on Saturday versus Japan.

The San Diego Gulls announced their 2015-'16 regular season schedule on Thursday, which includes their season opener at home on Oct. 10. Watch Gulls head coach Dallas Eakins talk about the inaugural season in San Diego below.

The El Paso Chihuahuas and San Diego Padres announced Wednesday that they will play a spring training game in El Paso in 2016.  This will be the first time the Friars play an affiliate since 2010.

Chargers kicker Josh Lambo, who made the transition from soccer to football this year, made a splash with Bolts fans last weekend with his game winning field goal to beat the Cardinals. And with just two preseason games left for the Chargers, here are some other storylines from the team: 1) The inside linebackers are looking to make a huge impact this year and 2) What's going to happen with the Chargers' receiving core.

San Diego State held a grand opening ceremony on Sunday for the 23,500-square foot Jeff Jacobs JAM Center which will support both the men's and women's basketball programs for the Aztecs.
