Sell. Closers. Now. Trust. Us.
Dave Cameron is one of the smartest people I know.
Fine. Don't believe Dave. After all, one can accomplish only so much in 140 characters.
Here are the pitchers with the most saves in 2012. That's just three years and four seasons ago...
JIM JOHNSON
FERNANDO RODNEY
CRAIG KIMBREL
RAFAEL SORIANO
JASON MOTTE
CHRIS PEREZ
AROLDIS CHAPMAN
JONATHAN PAPELBON
JOE NATHAN
JOEL HANRAHAN
I won't bore you with "Where are they now?"-style capsules for each of those fellows. Suffice to say only three of them are still closers, and at least one of them is on the trading block, with money likely to be sent along if he is somehow traded.
Granted, you can stack the deck in your favor some; three years ago, Kimbrel and Chapman were both young, with tremendous strikeout rates. It's probably not a coincidence that both are still highly effective.
