Shashank Manohar resigns as ICC chairman
NEW DELHI (AP) Shashank Manohar has resigned as ICC chairman, the governing body said Wednesday.
The ICC said in a statement it received Manohar's resignation via email and the ICC Board will now assess the situation and next steps before making a further announcement.
Manohar was elected as the first unopposed ICC chairman in May 2016 for a two-year term but resigned after only eight months.
Manohar had been trying to decentralize the powers held by ''Big Three'' member boards comprising India, Australia and England.
According to local media in India, Manohar wrote to ICC chief executive David Richardson and said he tried his best to be fair and impartial in deciding matters in the functioning of the board.
''However, for personal reasons it is not possible for me to hold the august office of ICC Chairman and hence I am tendering my resignation as Chairman with immediate effect,'' Manohar said in a letter.
Manohar replaced N Srinivasan as president of Board of Control for Cricket in India in November 2015 and since then he had widely spoken against the powers of the ''Big Three.''
Manohar quit as BCCI president in May after a commission's report brought a major shake-up in the structure of the Indian cricket board, but only couple of days later he took over as ICC chairman when he was elected unopposed.
