Shields gives up 3 homers, Padres fall to Diamondbacks
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- James Shields was derailed by two things on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks: home runs and walks.
Shields gave up three homers and walked four in 6 1-3 innings as the San Diego Padres lost to Arizona 4-2.
Shields (13-7) has given up 33 homers this year, tied for the most in the majors with Colorado's Kyle Kendrick.
"I'm not going to give up that many homers next year," he said. "I'm not worried about it. Not worried about my homers."
Shields has walked a career-high 81, also tied for the most in the majors.
"I'm not going to walk that many guys next year, either," Shields said. "I really don't walk guys like that. It's uncharacteristic for me."
Shields, in his first year with the Padres, reached 200 innings for the ninth straight season.
"I wanted to give him an opportunity to stay out there and continue to get outs," interim manager Pat Murphy said. "I thought he made some good pitches."
Ender Inciarte had two home runs among his four hits for the Diamondbacks.
Inciarte's first multihomer game of his career gave him six home runs this season. He drove in three runs and also stole his 21st base.
David Peralta added a solo homer for Arizona.
Shields had a four-game winning streak snapped in his final start this season at Petco Park.
Shields surrendered at least three home runs in an outing for the third time this year. He allowed a season-high four to the Diamondbacks when beating them on May 8.
Jhoulys Chacin (2-1) went three innings.
Brad Ziegler, the Diamondbacks' fifth pitcher, worked the ninth for his 29th save in 31 chances. It was his 27th straight save, the longest active streak in the majors.
Inciarte homered in the fifth, then hit a two-run homer in the seventh to break a 2-all tie.
"Ender came in before the game and said he was excited to play against Shields," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. "He took it as a real challenge."
The Padres threatened in the seventh when pinch-hitters Wil Myers and Melvin Upton Jr. drew walks. But after they advanced on Travis Jankowski's sacrifice, Cory Spangenberg and Matt Kemp struck out.
"I would have bet you anything the way (Spangenberg) has been swinging the bat lately, he would have made contact," Murphy said.
Shields is hoping next year is better for him and the Padres.
"It definitely could be better, no doubt about it," Shields said after his 33rd start. "I go out there every five days and pitch my heart out on my sleeve and go out and post every single game. I'm going to be a bulldog out there as much as I can and I'm hoping for better things next year."

Padres: 3B Yangervis Solarte wasn't in the lineup because of a strained right hamstring.

Diamondbacks: LHP Robbie Ray (5-12, 3.53) opens a three-game series against the visiting Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Ray, who won his previous time out against the Dodgers on Sept. 22, is 2-2 with a 2.39 ERA in his last five starts.
Padres: RHP Tyson Ross (10-11, 3.17) seeks his first win since Aug. 31 on Tuesday to begin a three-game series at home against Milwaukee. He has gone at least six innings in his previous four starts, but only has two losses and two no-decisions to show for it.
