SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The Padres' Travis Jankowski was a pest to the Brewers, which helped make winners out of San Diego on Monday night.
Jankowski had three hits and two walks and San Diego snapped Milwaukee's four-game winning streak, 7-3.
"Get on base five times in the leadoff spot, that's what you're looking for," Padres manager Andy Green said. "He's a game-changer on the base paths. The story of the game is obviously Travis Jankowski."
The Padres center fielder said he needed a game like Monday's.
"Coming back from the break I wasn't playing my best baseball," he said. "So getting that game and getting a couple of hits and getting the confidence back is huge for me."
Yangervis Solarte drove in two runs, with his second hit being the key blow during a five-run fifth.
Carlos Villanueva (2-2) pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Jarred Cosart, allowing two runs and two hits. Villanueva was the first of four Padres relievers.
Milwaukee's Jimmy Nelson (6-10) ran into trouble in the fifth when the Padres went ahead 6-2 and exited with four innings pitched and eight hits allowed. It was the second time San Diego beat Nelson this season, and overall he's lost seven of his last eight decisions.
"There aren't words that can describe how frustrated I am," Nelson said. "I'm definitely feeling every negative emotion you can think of."
In the fifth, Alexi Amarista had an RBI single, Solarte added a two-run single, Ryan Schimpf tripled in Solarte and Adam Rosales' sacrifice fly scored Schimpf.
"(Nelson) just didn't have his best stuff tonight, that's for sure," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.
Amarista left after advancing to third on Wil Myers' double. Amarista strained his left hamstring -- he missed 27 games this year with an injured right hamstring.
Milwaukee pulled within 6-3 on Chris Carter's 25th homer of the season.
The Brewers seized a 2-1 advantage on Hernan Perez's homer in the fifth, a two-run shot off Villanueva which scored Scooter Gennett after Gennett's single extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games.
Perez's 381-foot home run was on an 88-mph fastball that just cleared the right-field fence.
Cosart made his Padres debut after Friday's seven-player trade with the Miami Marlins. He got off to a shaky start, walking his first two batters before wiggling from the jam. In the second and third, he was supported by double plays in each inning to escape damage.
But Cosart's lack of command contributed to him lasting but 3 1/3 innings. He didn't allow a run and just one hit, but he walked six batters, hit another one and was gone after 77 pitches.
"We ultimately didn't get the hit to make him pay for it," Counsell
