Souza Jr. hits grand slam as Rays tie Orioles
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- Pedro Alvarez drove in five runs with a grand slam and double, Mark Trumbo hit a two-run shot and the Baltimore Orioles and Cuba-bound Tampa Bay Rays played to an 8-8 tie on Sunday.
The Rays were scheduled to leave from Tampa for Havana to play the Cuban national team on Tuesday in the first game by an American team there since the Orioles visited in 1999.
"This is coming at an ideal time in spring training. Any club will tell you, you hit that staleness of spring training at about the two-thirds point. This is a great time for this to be happening," manager Kevin Cash said.
Alvarez, who recently signed with the Orioles, hit his first home run of the spring in the second inning. Trumbo hit his third home run in the third.
Chris Tillman, who missed his first start for Baltimore with a strained hip, allowed three runs on five hits in four innings. He gave up back-to-back home runs to Logan Morrison and Evan Longoria in the third.
Steven Souza Jr. hit a grand slam off T.J. McFarland in the Rays fifth to tie it at 7. The game was called after nine innings.
