Stars align: Giancarlo Stanton, Dee Gordon voted in as All-Star Game starters
Miami Marlins Giancarlo Stanton and Dee Gordon were voted in as National League starters for this month's All-Star Game, MLB announced Sunday night.
It marks the first time in Marlins history two players were voted in as starters for the same All-Star Game. Only third baseman Gary Sheffield (1993) and shortstop Hanley Ramirez (2008-10) warranted enough support from the fans in the past.
Stanton, who went on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist hamate fracture June 27, will not be able to participate in either the Home Run Derby or game. Prior to the injury, he led the majors with 27 home runs and 67 RBI in 74 games.
The 25-year-old slugger, who finished with the second-most votes among NL outfielders with 7,036,537, earned his third All-Star honor and second in a row. He has missed the festivities twice (2012, 2015) due to surgeries. Last year as the designated hitter, Stanton went hitless with a strikeout in three at-bats.
With 7,574,750 votes, Gordon makes his second straight All-Star appearance. In 2014 as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, he came in as a substitute for the Philadelphia Phillies' Chase Utley. He grounded into a fielder's choice and eventually scored a run.
The 27-year-old speedster leads the big leagues with 114 hits and ranks third in the NL with a .343 average. He received the highest vote total among NL second basemen, never trailing during the process.
First of all I want to thank God for his favor and my family..and to the millions of fans who voted THANKU! #ASG2015 pic.twitter.com/tQHzSFAF6Y
