StaTuesday: Brewers' Ryan Braun hits major milestones

Published Apr. 24, 2018 3:09 p.m. ET

Ryan Braun hit a couple milestones last week.

The longtime Milwaukee Brewers outfielder reached 1,000 career RBI on April 19, then two days later bashed his 700th career extra-base hit.

While plenty of other players have also reached those numbers, it is still a relatively exclusive club. Braun became the 282nd major league to knock in 1,000 runs -- just 1.4 percent of the over 19,000 to have appeared in an MLB game have done this.

The 700+ extra-base hit club is even rarer. Braun was the 189th player to reach that total, or 0.9 percent of all the major leaguers.

Braun is one of nine active players to have 1,000 or more RBI over their career. But among those nine, he's third in RBI per plate appearance, behind only Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera, two likely future Hall of Famers.

PLAYER YRS RBI RBI/PA
Albert Pujols 18 1,930 5.84
Adrian Beltre 21 1,648 7.12
Miguel Cabrera 16 1,627 5.90
Robinson Cano 14 1,192 7.19
Adrian Gonzalez 15 1,187 6.66
Victor Martinez 16 1,134 6.81
Edwin Encarnacion 14 1,055 6.60
Chase Utley 16 1,019 7.58
Ryan Braun 12 1,003 6.29

Braun was the eighth active player to reach 700 extra-base hits. And again, he trails only Pujols and Cabrera among the active 700 club in slugging percentage. None of the other five are over .500.

Over the 189 players with 700+ career extra-base hits, a number of them played with the Brewers, including Hank Aaron, Dante Bichette, Mike Cameron, Cecil Cooper, Ray Durham, Jim Edmonds, Carlos Lee, Paul Molitor, Dave Parker and Ted Simmons.

And, of course, there's Robin Yount, the only other player in Milwaukee franchise history to top 700 extra-base hits and 1,000 RBI and he's well in front of Braun with 960 and 1,406, respectively.
