Takeaways from the Padres' 5-1 loss

SAN DIEGO-- The New York Mets rode a strong outing by Jacob DeGrom and a three-run home run by Asdrubal Cabrera en route to a 5-1 victory over the San Diego Padres.

The Mets improved to 16-8 while the Padres fell to 9-18.

Takeaways:

Padres offense struggles against DeGrom

Jacob DeGrom entered Friday's game with a 2-0 record and a 2.53 ERA in five starts, and he kept his early season dominance going with an impressive effort.

The right-hander threw 7 1/3 shutout innings against San Diego, striking out eight Padres hitters. He exited to a standing ovation from the visiting Mets faithful after allowing a one-out single to Wil Myers in the eighth.

If the two stay healthy, New York will have one of the better one-two punches in all of baseball with DeGrom and Noah Syndergaard. Judging by their early-season success, so far so good.

Stammen surrenders first home run

Craig Stammen had been nails out of the Padres bullpen entering tonight, posting a 2.03 ERA and a 1.45 FIP in 13 1/3 innings. It was no surprise to see Andy Green bring him in at a big spot in the seventh inning.

With runners on second and third and two out, manager Andy Green took out starter Clayton Richard to bring on Stammen. The lefty was running out of gas and Asdrubal Cabrera, the next man up, had doubled off of Richard earlier on in the game.

Stammen entered the game to face Cabrera. On the first pitch, the Mets second baseman smoked a three-run home run over the right field wall to make the score 4-0. With DeGrom on the mound, it was essentially game over.

Cabrera has had a strong start to the season, with five home runs and an OPS north of .950. He has arguably been the Mets' best hitter in the first month.

Hosmer gets PETCO'd

With one out in the eighth inning, Eric Hosmer hit a long, towering fly ball towards the T-Mobile home run deck in right field. The former Royal seemingly thought he had got it all... just to see the ball die right in front of the wall.

It was that kind of night for San Diego. It was also a reminder to everyone, that even with the fences being moved in a few years back, the marine layer can still strike back.

Cordero hits 5th homer

Speaking of the marine layer, Padres OF Franchy Cordero managed to hit a 405-foot home run in the ninth inning over the center field fence. It was the outfielder's fifth home run of the season.

"He's going to play. He's earned the opportunity to prove what he can do," Andy Green stated after the game when asked about Cordero's future playing time. "I would expect he's going to be out there a lot."

The home run came off of Mets RHP Matt Harvey.
