Three Brewers named to Baseball America's minors all-star team
The Milwaukee Brewers traded away some veterans this year to help bolster their farm system, but one of the best prospects has been there all along.
On Wednesday, Jorge Lopez was one of five starting pitchers named on Baseball America's 2015 minor-league all-star team.
Lopez, who pitched for Double-A Biloxi this season, was 12-5 in 24 starts with a 2.26 ERA while striking out nearly one batter per inning.
Baseball America's analysis:
"Lopez sharpened his power curveball to the point where opposing managers singled him out for having the best breaking pitch in the Southern League, and he claimed the circuit's pitcher of the year award after posting a 1.54 ERA over his final 100 innings at Biloxi. Lopez, who like fellow all-star Jose Berrios hails from Puerto Rico, narrowly missed the league's ERA title (2.26) but still ranked among the minor league elite in that category as well as opponent average (.205)."
Last year, Jimmy Nelson was named as one of the five starters on BA's all-star team. Perhaps Lopez will be joining him in the Brewers' rotation soon enough.
Lopez wasn't the only Brewers prospect tabbed by Baseball America as outfielders Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana -- both of whom were acquired from the Houston Astros -- made the second team.
Phillips hit just .250 in 23 games with Double-A Biloxi after coming over from the Houston organization, but he had a .363 on-base percentage and .413 slugging percentage. He also had a slash line of 320/379/588 with Single-A Lancaster and 321/372/463 with Double-A Corpus Christi in 2015.
After batting .320 with 16 home runs in 75 games for Triple-A Fresno, Santana batted .380 with a .544 slugging percentage in 20 games for Milwaukee's Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs. He is now bashing home runs for the Brewers, with five in 15 games since being recalled.
