The Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday waived 39-year-old guard Andre Miller, who is hoping to join a team contending for the playoffs.

Miller, a 17-year veteran, played in 26 games this season but none since the All-Star break, as the Timberwolves gave rookie Tyus Jones playing time at point guard behind Ricky Rubio.

"Andre was a consummate professional and set a good example for our younger players on what it takes to be a pro in this league," Timberwolves general manager Milt Newton said in a statement. "We wish him the best."

The Timberwolves signed Miller in the offseason to help mentor the young guards. The team needed to waive him by March 1 for him to be eligible for postseason play.

Miller has averaged 3.4 points, 2.2 assists and 10.8 minutes per game this year. He has career averages of 12.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.6 assists in 1,291 games.
