Toews On Ice wins Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar
DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) Toews On Ice rallied after being passed entering the stretch to win the $100,000 Bob Hope Stakes for 2-year-olds by 1 1/4 lengths Saturday at Del Mar.
Ridden by Martin Garcia, Toews On Ice covered seven furlongs in 1:22.27 and paid $3.80, $2.80 and $2.20 as the 4-5 favorite.
Mac Daddy Mac returned $3.80 and $3, while I'malreadythere was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $4.80 at 16-1 odds.
Toews On Ice is trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert and named for Jonathan Toews, captain of the Chicago Blackhawks.
''Tougher race for him today, but he responded,'' Garcia said. ''That other horse (Mac Daddy Mac) got in front of him in the stretch for a little bit, but he dug in and went and got him. He's been a little green, but he did real well.''
The victory, worth $60,000, increased Toews On Ice's career earnings to $175,200, with three wins in five starts for the colt co-owned by Mike Pegram.
Garcia was one of three jockeys who rode two winners on the card. Also doubling were apprentice David Lopez and leading rider Santiago Gonzalez.
