Towns, Jones headline Wolves' summer-league roster
The Timberwolves on Monday announced their roster for the Samsung NBA Summer League, and only one of Minnesota's three No. 1 overall picks will be playing.
Karl-Anthony Towns, the team's top selection in the June draft, headlines the list of players who will compete in Las Vegas. Fellow rookie Tyus Jones, the Apple Valley native whom the Timberwolves chose 24th, is also on the roster. Neither of the No. 1 overall picks from the previous two drafts, Andrew Wiggins nor Anthony Bennett -- both of whom are on the Timberwolves and are eligible to participate in the summer league -- are on the team.
Guard Zach LaVine, who averaged 10.1 points and 3.6 assists for Minnesota in his first NBA season, is on the roster. After being the 13th pick in the 2014 draft, the high-flying LaVine won the Sprite Slam Dunk contest last year. Other notable names on the roster are Lorenzo Brown, a third-year guard, and Adreian Payne, a second-year forward, both of whom saw the floor for the Timberwolves last season.
Assistant coach Ryan Saunders will be at the helm of the squad, which features nine rookies. According to the Timberwolves, Wiggins, along with third-year players Gorgui Dieng and Shabazz Muhammad, will practice with the summer-league team during its mini-camp, but none of them will play.
Minnesota begins the three-game preliminary round of the schedule on July 10 against the Los Angeles Lakers, before facing the Chicago Bulls on July 11 and the Utah Jazz on July 13. After the first round, the Timberwolves will take part in a tournament, starting July 15 and ending July 20, in which every team is guaranteed at least two additional games.
The Samsung NBA Summer League comprises 24 squads -- 14 teams that made the playoffs last season, nine teams from the draft lottery and one NBA Development League Select Team.
