Twins minor-league stars of the week: July 17
Here's a look at what Gordon and the rest of this week's minor-league stars did throughout Minnesota's farm system.
TRIPLE-A ROCHESTER
Player of the Week: SS Jorge Polanco
2015 stats (overall in minors): .306/.346/.407, 17 2B, 32 RBI
Recent highlights: Polanco, a speedy 22-year-old with 15 stolen bases this season, has seen his batting average steadily climb in recent days. That stretch was highlighted by a 4-for-4 performance at Syracuse on July 12.
Pitcher of the Week: RHP Michael Tonkin
2015 stats: 2-1, 1.52 ERA, 23 2/3, 34 K, 4 BB, 0.85 WHIP
Recent highlights: Opponents have hit just .181 against Tonkin this season, and the righty continued his run of solid 2015 performances on July 11. On that day, Tonkin allowed nary a run over 1 2/3 innings pitched, with one strikeout, as the Red Wings posted an 8-4 win at Syracuse.
DOUBLE-A CHATTANOOGA
Player of the Week: 2B Stephen Wickens
2015 stats: .245/.339/.348, 9 2B, 13 SB
Recent highlights: Wickens is a 26-year-old underdog who was a 33rd-round draft choice by the Twins out of Florida Gulf Coast in 2011. Regardless, he has hit like a legitimate prospect of late. From July 5-15, Wickens went 10 for 28 (.357) at the plate. His best game in recent days: A 2-for-4 performance, which included a stolen base, vs. Mississippi on July 12.
Pitcher of the Week: LHP David Hurlbut
2015 stats: 5-5, 3.84 ERA, 61 IP, 36 K, 21 BB
Recent highlights: Hurlbut, a 25-year-old Cal State Fullerton product, had a stellar start on Monday. In a win versus Mississippi, Hurlbut pitched seven scoreless innings, scattering five hits and yielding just a pair of walks. The Lookouts eventually held on for a 4-3 victory.
HIGH-A FORT MYERS
Player of the Week: SS Ryan Walker
2015 stats: .265/.309/.279, 8 RBI, 3 SB in 41 games
Recent highlights: Walker, 23, hit .378 (14 for 37) from July 4 through July 15, with five multi-hit games during that span. His fine recent stretch included a 2-for-3 effort on Monday, versus Clearwater.
Pitcher of the Week: RHP Kohl Stewart
Kohl Stewart
2015 stats: 4-5, 3.28 ERA, 79 2/3 IP, 40 K, 27 BB
Recent highlights: Stewart, the Twins' first-round draft choice in 2013, looked the part of a prized prospect on July 11 in a win over Clearwater. Stewart, a 20-year old righty, went seven innings and allowed just one earned run while scattering seven hits, striking out two and walking three.
LOW-A CEDAR RAPIDS
Player of the Week: SS Nick Gordon
2015 stats: .267/.332/.319, 37 RBI, 22 SB
Recent highlights: Gordon, the 19-year-old younger brother of Miami Marlins All-Star Dee Gordon, has garnered headlines of his own lately, for impressive play. Gordon has had eight RBI over his last 10 games, and, since July 12, is hitting .400 (6 for 15).
Pitcher of the Week: RHP Luke Bard
2015 stats: 5-0, 1.65 ERA, 27 1/3 IP, 6 BB, 0.99 WHIP
Recent highlights: Bard is 3-0 with a 1.69 ERA over his last 10 outings. On July 12, Bard threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out two in the Kernels' narrow loss at Kane County.
