West Indies 64-1 at lunch on day 4 vs Australia, chasing 460
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Rajendra Chandrika and Darren Bravo provided the West Indies with steady progress toward an improbable victory target of 460 against Australia, steering the tourists to 64-1 at lunch Tuesday, the fourth day of the second test.
After Australia declared its second innings on the overnight score of 179-3, Kraigg Brathwaite scored 31 off 34 balls before becoming the only wicket to fall in the opening session, cutting a Nathan Lyon (1-10) delivery to Steven Smith at first slip. Brathwaite drove a boundary over mid-off from the previous delivery.
At lunch, Chandrika was 17 not out and Bravo on a watchful 14.
Australia's no-ball woes continued when Bravo edged a ball to slip just before lunch only for replays to show Josh Hazelwood overstepped. It was the third time in the match the West Indies had benefited from such a reprieve.
James Pattinson squandered two dismissals of Carlos Brathwaite due to no balls Monday to significantly prolong the West Indies innings and deny Australia a possible three-day victory.
Tempers flared briefly after Australia was denied a review on a decision that Chandrika was not out lbw while on 14.
The on-field umpires ruled that Smith's decision to ask for a review came after the 15-second timeframe allowed. Replays subsequently indicated the not out decision was correct.
The anger reflected Australia's frustration at a stubborn West Indies fightback since the tourists were 91-6 in the first innings in reply to Australia 551-3 declared. Bravo anchored the West Indies resistance in that innings and loomed as the main impediment to Australia's victory push in the second innings.
