South Florida high school basketball star Trey Mourning had something added to his player bio on Monday -- son of a basketball Hall of Famer.
Trey's dad, Alonzo, was named a member of the Class of 2014 to be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this August.
Speaking on a conference call to discuss the honor Monday night, the former Miami Heat center said he didn't think his newfound Hall of Fame status would affect his talented son.
"He's embraced the fact that he's going to always carry my name, so there's no running from that," Mourning said. "It's going to be on the back of his jersey for the rest of his life, so people are going to have expectations of him.
"He knows that he has to work his butt off, which he's doing. The beauty of it is, I don't really have to tell him anything. He's kind of grown up around it. He's seen what his father has done and he's taken notes, mental notes."
Trey Mourning is a 6-foot-9, 215-pound senior power forward who played for Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, Fla.
Mourning said his son would decide between Florida, Duke and Georgetown -- the father's alma mater -- in the next 2 to 3 weeks.
The Mournings attended a dinner for the 2014 Hall of Fame class on Sunday night. Seated at the same table were sports executive Jerry Colangelo, Nike co-founder Phil Knight, former NBA commissioner David Stern and former college coach George Raveling.
"Trey was extremely engaging in the conversation," Alonzo Mourning said, "so it grabbed my heart to see how mature he was to feel comfortable in that atmosphere and not be intimidated by those individuals.
"He's going to be OK. I'm excited about his future."
