Every Thursday for the rest of the season, FOX Sports Wisconsin will take a closer look at some specific young players -- as well as noting others who might be stepping up -- measuring, highlighting and evaluating their progress. Zach Davies (age 23)

Notable: Davies has had back-to-back strong starts and even picked up his first win of the year last time out. In three April starts, Davies had an 8.78 ERA and opponents had a slash line of 411/485/625. In his two May starts, Davies' ERA is 3.27 and the opponents are batting 244/340/390.

 

Ramon Flores (age 23)

Last week: 6 games, 16 PA, .385 BA, .438 OBP, .462 SLG, .899 OPS, 146 sOPS+, .500 BAbip

Season: 30 games, 78 PA, .191 BA, .282 OBP, .221 SLG, .503 OPS, 2 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 6 R, 6 RBI, 0 SB, 9 BB, 18 K, .255 BAbip, 36 OPS+, -0.2 WAR.

Notable: Flores clearly had his best week of the season as he raised his batting average nearly 50 points. He had starts in center field and left field and also was a sub in right field.

 

Yadiel Rivera (age 24)

Last week: 2 games, 8 PA, .125 BA, .125 OBP, .125 SLG, .250 OPS, 7 sOPS+, .250 BAbip

Season: 17 games, 47 PA, .196 BA, .213 OBP, .261 SLG, .474 OPS, 3 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 7 R, 1 RBI, 0 SB, 1 BB, 18 K, 25 OPS+, .321 BAbip, -0.3 WAR.

Notable: Had the opportunity to take over for Scooter Gennett, but was unable to hold down the job. In danger of being removed from the Young Brewers Tracker.

 

Domingo Santana (age 23)

Last week: 5 games, 8 PA, 1 R, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K, .200 BA, .500 OBP, .200 SLG, .700 OPS, 102 sOPS+, 1.000 BAbip

Season: 30 games, 109 PA, .242 BA, .339 OBP, .411 SLG, .750 OPS, 7 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 12 R, 12 RBI, 0 SB, 14 BB, 35 K, 98 OPS+, .351 BAbip, -0.4 WAR.

Notable: Due to shoulder injury, made first start since May 3 against Miami on May 11, going 1 for 3.

 

Jonathan Villar (age 25)

Notable: Had a pair of two-hit games against Miami on May 9-10. In the May 10 game, also had two runs, two RBI and two steals.

Orlando Arcia (age 21/Triple-A)

Last week: 6 games, 23 AB, 7 H, 1 3B, 2 R, 1 RBI, 0 SB, 1 BB, 4 K, .304 BA.

Season: 29 games, 115 AB, .304 BA, .333 OBP, .426 SLG, .759 OPS, 1 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 14 R, 18 RBI, 4 SB, 6 BB, 15 K.

Notable: Has a five-game hitting streak.

 

Keon Broxton (age 25/Triple-A)

Last week: 7 games, 24 AB, 11 H, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 5 R, 6 RBI, 3 BB, 5 K, 6 SB, .458 BA

Season: 21 games, 84 AB, .321 BA, .394 OBP, .595 SLG, .989 OPS, 6 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 16 R, 14 RBI, 12 SB, 10 BB, 22 K.

Notable: Broxton's big week includes being a home run short of the cycle on May 5, stealing at least one base in four games and now owning a 10-game hit streak. He boosted his average nearly 60 points in the past seven days.

 

Trent Clark (age 19/Single-A)

Season: 3 games, 9 AB, .333 BA, .538 OBP, .556 SLG, 1.094 OPS, 2 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 3 R, 0 RBI, 0 SB, 4 BB, 3 K.

Notable: The 2015 first-round pick was assigned to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers last week and was installed as the center fielder and leadoff hitter. Last season with the AZL Brewers and Helena he batted 309/424/430 with 25 steals in 55 games.

 

Clint Coulter (age 22/Single-A)

Last week: 1 games, 4 AB, 0 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K, .000 BA.

Season: 26 games, 99 AB, .221 BA, .282 OBP, .303 SLG, .585 OPS, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 9 R, 9 RBI, 0 SB, 8 BB, 22 K.

Notable: Was placed on 7-day DL due to right oblique injury.

 

Isan Diaz (age 19/Single-A)

Last week: 6 games, 25 AB, 6 H, 1 2B, 3 R, 0 RBI, 0 BB, 5 K, .240 BA.

Season: 32 games, 118 AB, .212 BA, .295 OBP, .347 SLG, .643 OPS, 7 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 13 R, 12 RBI, 2 SB, 13 BB, 29 K.

Notable: Had two-hit games on May 5 and May 7.

 

Josh Hader (age 22/Double-A)

Last week: 2 game (2 starts), 11 2/3 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 14 K, 1.54 ERA.

Season: 7 games (7 starts), 1-1, 1.04 ERA, 34 2/3 IP, 1.04 WHIP, 24 H, 0 HR, 12 BB, 46 K, .198 OBA.

Notable: Picked up decisions in both his starts last week. Got the loss while allowing two runs (one earned) in 5 2/3 innings and the win by allowing one run in six innings. He allowed four hits in both starts. He also finally allowed a hit to a lefty, who are now batting .042 against him.

 

Adrian Houser (age 23/Double-A)

Last week: 1 games (1 start), 1-0, 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1.50 ERA.

Season: 6 games (6 starts), 2-3, 7.20 ERA, 30 IP, 1.37 WHIP, 30 H, 2 HR, 11 BB, 30 K, .261 OBA.

Notable: After three bad starts following his five-inning no-hit game, tied his season-high with a six-inning effort (89 pitches), allowing just one run on three hits against Jacksonville.

 

Jorge Lopez (age 23/Triple-A)

Last week: 1 games (1 starts), 0-0, 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 K, 1.80 ERA.

Season: 6 games (6 starts), 0-2, 7.33 ERA, 23 1/3 IP, 2.31 WHIP, 31 H, 1 HR, 23 BB, 25 K, .316 OBA

Notable: Last season in Biloxi he walked 3.2 batters per nine innings (in 143 1/3 innings). This season, Lopez is walking 8.8/9 IP.

 

Jacob Nottingham (age 21/Double-A)

Last week: 6 games, 26 AB, 6 H, 1 R, 1 RBI, 0 BB, 5 K, .231 BA.

Season: 26 games, 95 AB, .200 BA, .262 OBP, .284 SLG, .546 OPS, 2 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 10 R, 8 RBI, 2 SB, 7 BB, 24 K.

Notable: Has a hit in 11 of last 12 games. Stole two bases in last three games, matching his season total from last year.

 

Brett Phillips (Age 21/Double-A)

Last week: 7 games, 27 AB, 8 H, 6 R, 1 2B, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 0 BB, 8 K, .296 BA.

Season: 31 games, 109 AB, .257 BA, .352 OBP, .450 SLG, .802 OPS, 4 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 19 R, 24 RBI, 1 SB, 14 BB, 39 K.

Notable: Phillips had a good week on May 7, when he slugged three two-run homers. He also had a pair of two-hit games and had 10 RBI on the week, giving him 10 more than anyone else on Biloxi.

 

Michael Reed (age 23/Triple-A)

Last week: 6 games, 16 AB, 2 H, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 R, 0 RBI, 2 BB, 7 K, .125 BA.

Season: 27 games, 90 AB, .244 BA, .382 OBP, .300 SLG, .682 OPS, 3 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 15 R, 6 RBI, 7 SB, 19 BB, 26 K.

Notable: A rough week which started out with an 0 for 4 game with four strikeouts on May 5. 

 

Others: Colorado Springs catcher Manny Pina is batting .371 over the last 10 days and is batting 367/412/595 on the season. That's just not because of playing in Colorado -- Pina is batting 357/413/619 on the road. . . . Taylor Jungmann's first two starts at Colorado Springs did not go well: 8 IP, 14 H, 14 R (13 ER), 10 BB, 8 K. . . . Biloxi 3B Garrett Cooper (3rd round, 2013) leads the team in OPS (.837) with a slash line of 297/404/432. . . . Brandon Woodruff (11th round, 2014) of Brevard County is 3-1 with a 1.66 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 39 K in 38 IP.  . . .  Wisconsin 3B Jake Gatewood (1st round compensatory, 2014) had a big week, blasting four home runs. He is batting .417 with 5 HR, 8 R and 14 RBI in his last 10 games. . . . RHP Jon Perrin (27th round, 2015), who finally walked a batter, was promoted to Brevard County and RHP Devin Williams to Wisconsin.

 

A glossary of some of the advanced statistics used:

OPS: On base percentage + slugging percentage

OPS+: OPS compared to league average of 100, adjusted to the player's ballpark

sOPS+: OPS for the split (in our case the last 7 days) compared to the league's split OPS (100 being average).

BAbip: Batting average on balls in play.

WHIP: Walks plus hits divided by innings pitched.

ERA+: ERA compared to league average of 100, adjusted to the player's ballpark

FIP: Fielding Independent Pitching. Measures a pitcher's effectiveness at presenting home runs, walks and hit by pitches while causing strikeouts. The MLB average FIP is the same as the MLB average ERA.

WAR: Wins Above Replacement value. Represents the number of wins the player added to the team above what a replacement player would add (we are using WAR from baseball-reference.com).
