Every Thursday for the rest of the season, FOX Sports Wisconsin will take a closer look at some specific young players -- as well as noting others who might be stepping up -- measuring, highlighting and evaluating their progress. Please note the glossary of advanced stats at the bottom of the story.

Keon Broxton (age 25)

Last week: 6 games, 15 PA, 1 2B, 4 BB,  4 K, .182 BA, .400 OBP, .273 SLG, .673 OPS, 87 sOPS+, .286 BAbip

Season: 15 games, 43 PA, .083 BA, .233 OBP, .111 SLG, .344 OPS, 1 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 4 R, 0 RBI, 2 SB, 7 BB, 21 K, .200 BAbip, -3 OPS+, -0.2 WAR.

Notable: Another week of firsts for Broxton, who got his first major-league extra-base hit -- a double vs. Cincinnati on May 27. Started four games last week as well.

 

Zach Davies (age 23)

Last week: 2 games (2 starts), 2-0, 1.32 ERA, 13 2/3 IP, 9 H, 0 BB, 13 K, .188 OBA, .184 OBP, .313 SLG, 0.659 WHIP, 29 sOPS+, .206 BAbip,

Notable: After a rough April, finished May with a 2-0 record, 3.81 ERA and 1.129 WHIP. Got June off to a good start as well with eight scoreless innings vs. St. Louis on June 1.

 

Ramon Flores (age 23)

Last week: 6 games, 21 PA, 1 SB, 1 BB, 2 K, .250 BA, .286 OBP, .250 SLG, .536 OPS, 46 sOPS+, .278 BAbip

Season: 47 games, 126 PA, .211 BA, .296 OBP, .266 SLG, .562 OPS, 3 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 8 R, 9 RBI, 2 SB, 14 BB, 30 K, .274 BAbip, 53 OPS+, -0.1 WAR.

Notable: After a 146/216/170 April, had a slash line of 276/371/362 in May.

 

Domingo Santana (age 23)

Season: 36 games, 133 PA, .239 BA, .353 OBP, .381 SLG, .734 OPS, 7 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 15 R, 12 RBI, 0 SB, 19 BB, 45 K, 97 OPS+, .369 BAbip, -0.6 WAR.

Notable: Was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain on May 19.

 

Jonathan Villar (age 25)

Last week: 6 games, 26 PA, 1 2B, 7 R, 3 RBI, 4 SB, 7 BB, 6 K, .368 BA, .538 OBP, .421 SLG, .960 OPS, 164 sOPS+, .538 BAbip

Season: 51 games, 223 PA, .303 BA, .409 OBP, .416 SLG, .825 OPS, 15 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 28 R, 19 RBI, 19 SB, 33 BB, 54 K, 123 OPS+, .415 BAbip, 1.4 WAR.

Notable: Villar is batting 377/500/585 vs. left-handers and has hit both of his home runs off southpaws, including one May 26 vs. Atlanta's Ian Krol. Villar leads the majors in steals and is tied for seventh in walks. He is also tied for 5th in the National League in doubles and 10th in on-base percentage.

DOWN ON THE FARM

Orlando Arcia (age 21/Triple-A)

Last week: 6 games, 26 AB, 9 H, 1 2B, 6 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB, 2 BB, 2 K, .346 BA.

Season: 46 games, 193 AB, .306 BA, .340 OBP, .420 SLG, .759 OPS, 4 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR, 30 R, 24 RBI, 8 SB, 11 BB, 28 K.

Notable: Arcia had a hit in all six games Colorado Springs played last week.

 

Season: 12 games, 41 AB, .220 BA, .396 OBP, .416 SLG, .811 OPS, 6 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 7 R, 1 RBI, 0 SB, 12 BB, 15 K.

Notable: Remains on the disabled list due to a hamstring strain.

 

Clint Coulter (age 22/Single-A)

Last week: 6 games, 23 AB, 3 H, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SB, 1 BB, 8 K, .130 BA.

Season: 32 games, 122 AB, .197 BA, .265 OBP, .270 SLG, .535 OPS, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 10 R, 11 RBI, 1 SB, 9 BB, 30 K.

Notable: Came off the disabled list May 26 after missing three weeks.

 

Isan Diaz (age 19/Single-A)

Last week: 6 games, 26 AB, 7 H, 0 R, 6 RBI, 3 BB, 7 K, .269 BA.

Season: 50 games, 191 AB, .215 BA, .296 OBP, .319 SLG, .615 OPS, 11 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 18 R, 21 RBI, 3 SB, 21 BB, 51 K.

Notable: Had hits in five of his six games this past week (and six of his last seven), raising his average 16 points.

 

Josh Hader (age 22/Double-A)

Last week: 1 game (1 start), 5 1/3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 1.69 ERA.

Season: 10 games (10 starts), 1-1, 0.88 ERA, 51 IP, 1.00 WHIP, 34 H, 1 HR, 17 BB, 65 K, .194 OBA.

Notable: Allowed his first home run of the season to former Brewers prospect Mitch Haniger. Finished May with an 0.96 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and .189 OBA.

 

Last week: 2 games (2 starts), 0-1, 11 IP, 17 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 7 K, 4.09 ERA.

Season: 10 games (10 starts), 2-5, 6.08 ERA, 53 1/3 IP, 1.46 WHIP, 61 H, 4 HR, 17 BB, 40 K, .290 OBA.

Notable: Threw a season-high 97 pitches vs. Mississippi on June 1, allowing just one run on seven hits in six innings.

 

Jorge Lopez (age 23/Triple-A)

Last week: 1 game (1 start), 0-0, 4 2/3 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 K, 5.78 ERA.

Season: 10 games (10 starts), 1-3, 6.20 ERA, 45 IP, 1.96 WHIP, 55 H, 1 HR, 33 BB, 38 K, .299 OBA

Notable: Threw a season-high 95 pitches at Fresno on May 30, his second 90+-pitch outing in his last three starts. Lopez struck out a season-high six batters in that game as well.

 

Jacob Nottingham (age 21/Double-A)

Last week: 5 games, 20 AB, 6 H, 1 HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 6 K, .300 BA.

Season: 43 games, 160 AB, .244 BA, .305 OBP, .356 SLG, .661 OPS, 3 2B, 0 3B, 5 HR, 19 R, 14 RBI, 3 SB, 11 BB, 41 K.

Notable: After a rough April (159/243/270) batted 308/357/418 in May -- although he had 7 RBI in each month.

 

Brett Phillips (Age 21/Double-A)

Last week: 4 games, 20 AB, 7 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 7 K, .350 BA.

Season: 41 games, 150 AB, .267 BA, .345 OBP, .467 SLG, .812 OPS, 7 2B, 1 3B, 7 HR, 26 R, 28 RBI, 2 SB, 16 BB, 55 K.

Notable: Returned from disabled list May 28 and had a hit in each of his four games, including three in his first game back. Leads Biloxi in runs, RBI, HR and slugging percentage.

 

Michael Reed (age 23/Triple-A)

Last week: 7 games, 22 AB, 3 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 6 R, 3 RBI, 7 BB, 5 K, 1 SB, .136 BA

Season: 40 games, 134 AB, .216 BA, .369 OBP, .313 SLG, .682 OPS, 5 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 24 R, 14 RBI, 9 SB, 31 BB, 40 K.

Notable: Hit a grand slam May 30 at Fresno. Walked in six of the seven games last week, the exception being the game he homered.

 

Yadiel Rivera (age 24/Triple-A)

Last week: 7 games, 32 AB, 12 H, 3 2B, 1 3B, 5 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 SB, .375 BA

Season: 16 games, 69 AB, .319 BA, .351 OBP, .449 SLG, .801 OPS, 3 2B, 3 3B, 0 HR, 10 R, 9 RBI, 2 SB, 3 BB, 17 K.

Notable: Has a six-game hitting streak (12 for 29, .414), including four games with multiple hits. Had three-hit games at Fresno on May 27 and vs. Omaha on June 1 in the second game of a doubleheader. Has played 10 games at second base but also three at third and one at shortstop.

Others: Colorado Springs OF Shane Peterson, who recently came off the DL and is batting 347/429/694, was named PCL Player of the Week. . . . The struggles of SP Taylor Jungmann (1st round, 2011) continue in Colorado Springs where he has a 10.41 ERA and 2.49 WHIP. . . . Recently recalled Jacob Barnes (14th round, 2011) had a 1.21 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 22 1/3 innings. . . . Biloxi 3B Garrett Cooper (6th round, 2013) is batting 317/374/439 with 15 doubles. . . . OF Malik Collymore has played 5 games with Brevard County, going 3 for 11 with a double, 3 runs and 1 RBI. . . .  Brevard County SP Bubba Derby, acquired from Oakland in the Khris Davis trade, has a 4.05 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 51 K in 46 2/3 IP. . . . Brevard County LHP Kodi Medeiros (1st round, 2014) was played on the disabled list retroactive to May 28. . . . Wisconsin SS Luis Aviles had a 14-game hit streak snapped on May 31. . . . Wisconsin SS Blake Allemand (5th round, 2015) is batting 311/382/437 and leads the team with a .819 OPS. . . . Wisconsin RHP Marcos Diplan has a 1.69 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 56 K in 42 2/3 IP.

A glossary of some of the advanced statistics used:

OPS: On base percentage + slugging percentage

OPS+: OPS compared to league average of 100, adjusted to the player's ballpark

sOPS+: OPS for the split (in our case the last 7 days) compared to the league's split OPS (100 being average).

BAbip: Batting average on balls in play.

WHIP: Walks plus hits divided by innings pitched.

ERA+: ERA compared to league average of 100, adjusted to the player's ballpark

FIP: Fielding Independent Pitching. Measures a pitcher's effectiveness at presenting home runs, walks and hit by pitches while causing strikeouts. The MLB average FIP is the same as the MLB average ERA.

WAR: Wins Above Replacement value. Represents the number of wins the player added to the team above what a replacement player would add (we are using WAR from baseball-reference.com).
