15-year-old Alphonso Davies, born in 2000, makes his first MLS start
Alphonso Davies, a 15-year-old who was born in 2000, was named to the starting XI for the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night, becoming the second-youngest player to ever start in MLS.
Davies made his start as the Whitecaps were pushing to try to break into playoffs against the Colorado Rapids.
He made his MLS debut for the Whitecaps in July, coming on as a substitute one day after he signed his professional contract with the MLS team. When he signed, Davis became the third-youngest player to sign an MLS contract. The youngest player was Freddy Adu who was 14 years, 306 days old when he debuted in 2004.
The Canadian forward had a pretty quick rise to the pros. Davies signed with Whitecaps FC 2 in USL, the Whitecaps reserve team, in February and became the youngest player ever to score in USL before moving up in the ranks.
Earlier this month, he scored in a CONCACAF Champions League group fixture against Sporting Kansas City in stoppage time, helping send his club into the knockout round.
So, the kid has got the skills to compete, but it’s made all the more stunning by the fact that Davies was born on November 2, 2000, which officially just makes all of us feel old.
For perspective, around when Davies was born, “Independent Women Part I” by Destiny’s Child from the "Charlie’s Angels" reboot soundtrack was at the top of the Billboard charts. That movie was No. 1 at the box office, with "Meet The Parents" in second. None of us at FOX Soccer still know all the words to "Independent Women Part I" at all -- ahem -- no siree.
It may make a lot of us feel old, but the future sure looks bright for the Canadian national team and the Vancouver Whitecaps, thanks to Davies.
