Aleksandar Mitrovic's confidence is sky high - despite only playing twice

Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic’s confidence is sky high, despite only playing twice for the club this season.

The former Anderlecht man served a four match suspension at the start of the season for red card picked up against Tottenham Hotspur last campaign.

He was then forced to watch as Dwight Gayle scored four goals in only five games – before coming off injured against Cheltenham Town.

Mitrovic missed the following two games as a result, but was handed his first league start of the season in the win over Queens Park Rangers.

The Serbian did manage to hit the back of the net, but Magpies’ manager Rafa Benitez’s desire to rotate the squad means it’s unclear whether or not he will start on Saturday.

Despite these setbacks, Mitrovic was always confident that he would be able to come back with a bang.

“I always knew I would come through OK and the game against QPR proves that,” the Chronicle reported that he said.

Despite not being at full match fitness, the forward put in a good shift and was rewarded with that second half strike.

Goals are every striker’s currency, and Mitrovic feels that he can keep on bringing home the bacon. “I feel like I can definitely score goals at this level,” he added.

“I am confident I can score goals this season and help Newcastle win games. It obviously helps because I have a lot of good players around me, and that’s important for everybody.”

United signed Daryl Murphy from Ipswich Town near the end of the transfer window, but the Serbian is welcoming the extra competition.

“There is good competition up front as well, which is good. There’s Dwight Gayle, Ayoze and now Murphy as well. I like that. We will push each other and get better, which can only be good.”
