Aleksander Ceferin the favorite in UEFA's presidential election

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The UEFA presidential election is Wednesday, and multiple European sources say they think Slovenian FA president Aleksander Ceferin will beat Michael van Praag of the Netherlands.

Ceferin, a 48-year-old lawyer, is viewed as an outsider to UEFA governance and as such a breath of fresh air in the post-FIFA scandal world. He supports term limits and giving a voice to smaller UEFA nations, and he has the support of many countries including France, Italy, Germany, Russia and, soureces say, FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

There has been a power vacuum at UEFA since former president Michel Platini was banned, and the European Clubs Association took advantage of that power vacuum, pushing through a new measure that will see the top four teams of the big major countries–England, Spain, Italy, Germany–all qualify automatically for the Champions League group stage beginning in 2018.
