Antonio Conte blames everyone but himself for Chelsea defeat

The Chelsea manager has blamed everyone at the club for the Liverpool loss

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte isn’t too worried about the club’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool yesterday. Of course, that might have something to do with the fact that he’s blamed everyone else at Stamford Bridge for the team’s failure.

The former Italy boss did admit that he needs to work harder to correct the team’s problems, but was quick to point out that the problems go well beyond the manager. He cited last season’s 10th place finish as proof that Chelsea have complex problems that can’t be fixed without a lot of work by everyone at the club.

As if that wasn’t enough deflection, Conte also pointed out that John Terry’s injury absence likely cost his team a point. His rationale was that Terry’s ability to combat set pieces would have kept Klopp’s side at bay. While he might have a point there, it didn’t come off well in combination with his other comments.

Perhaps it’s Conte who needs to study what happened last year at Chelsea. Things really went downhill with the dressing room turned their collective backs on manager Jose Mourinho. If Conte continues this sort of rhetoric, he may risk the same fate. You can bet that several of the club’s stars took note of their manager’s proclivity to blame others.

Fortunately for Conte, he’s got enough talent that his club shouldn’t lose all that many matches. Perhaps we should forgive him for not really understanding how to talk to the press after a tough loss. He hasn’t had all that much experience.

Conte’s post-match comments aren’t a problem yet, but they’re something to keep an eye on as the season progresses. It could lead to big problems at Stamford Bridge if Chelsea suffer a prolonged dip in form.
