Arsenal Better Off With Lucas Perez Over Daniel Sturridge
Arsenal apparently failed to land Daniel Sturridge on loan, but the Gunners are much better off with new boy Lucas Perez anyway.
Arsenal shored up all their business before transfer deadline day, yet according to reports, they were still trying to bailout Daniel Sturridge down to the last minute. Obviously it was unsuccessful.
The Liverpool man has not been able to break into Jurgen Klopp’s side and it’s becoming pretty apparent that he may not be part of Klopp’s plans at all. For that reason, it makes sense that he may be looking to score a move away from Anfield.
The reports are conflicting as to who approached who, but at the end of the day, what it comes down to is what Arsenal would have used Sturridge for. No doubt the guy has gobs of talent, but if Arsenal doesn’t have time for Chuba Akpom to get some much needed first team experience, than what business do they have letting Sturridge get his feet underneath him, just to send him back to Liverpool at the end of the year?
We are better off with Lucas Perez. It’s a clean buy. Lucas showed a ton of promise in his first year as a striker, does not have a prevalent injury record, has loyalty in his veins and he is now officially an Arsenal man.
Sturridge may very well have grown up an Arsenal supporter, but he is a Liverpool man and taking him on a one year loan wouldn’t change that. He would still be a Liverpool man. Plus, we really shouldn’t be putting any eggs in an injury-ridden forward’s basket. Surely we have learned that by now.
If it comes down to a choice between Sturridge and Lucas, even on a permanent move, I still side with Lucas. The whole point of finding a striker is giving Giroud a bit of needed reinforcement. He can’t do the job on his own (no one can), so he needs someone behind him that’s an actual striker that is always going to be there.
Sturridge has shown no indication that he would always be there. His injury record sparkles like Jack Wilshere’s, and I mean sparkles in a bad way.
This year-long loan idea sounded more like we were doing Liverpool a favor than anything. Arsenal’s isn’t their training ground. He needs first team experience to build up his match fitness, just like Jack Wilshere, but if a loan is what they want to do, they need to look somewhere else. Which apparently won’t be happening as the window is closed.
Am I crazy in this? Sturridge is a great player no doubt but I think Lucas Perez was the right way to go.
