Arsenal: Mesut Ozil Adding Goals Crucial To Season's Success

Mesut Ozil scored his second goal of the year as Arsenal battered Chelsea 3-0. The addition of goals to his game could be crucial for the season ahead.

For the past few seasons, Arsenal’s recent success has centred around the wonders of one man. The centre-piece of a talented midfield, the primary creator, the orchestrator and instigator, Mesut Ozil is truly a wonderful player. However, there has been one key indictment regarding his play, one that he is beginning to answer early this season.

Playing in the famed number 10 role off of a central striker, Ozil is tasked with both creating and scoring. While he has been exceptional at the former, the latter has caused him more issues, especially last season. In a year where he was catergorically the Gunners’ best player, Ozil only scored six Premier League goals.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

His success came in the way of assists, 19 of them in total, but doubts lingered over his ability in front of goal. However, so far this season Ozil is yet to record one assist for the club, though for a man of his talents, they will surely come. Goals, though, while far from free-flowing, seem to be pouring from the sweet left boot of the German with far more regularity.

It was in fact the his head that opened his account. In a fast-paced first half against Watford, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez combined to devastating effect with the Chilean clipping a delightful ball into the box for Ozil to power home the header. Once again, the two worked in tandem to rip apart a more (apparently) stout Chelsea defence on Saturday.

For Arsenal’s third goal of an incredible first 45 minutes, Ozil and Sanchez were at their devastating best. Ozil span away from N’Golo Kante before freeing his diminuitive teammate and then darting to the back post. Sanchez found him once more with a wonderful chipped cross and Ozil, in rather messy style it must be said, volleyed past the stranded Courtois.

His second goal of the season, and Ozil is beginning to find himself in more dangerous areas far more regularly. Once there, he is ice-cool under pressure, finishng like the consummate professional that he is. If he is able to continue his goalscoring form, then it could well bring great success to the Emirates this season.

With Olivier Giroud, Sanchez and Theo Walcott struggling to bear the weight of the primary goalscorer (though that should not necessarily be their role anyway), Wenger’s side must find ways to score through many sources. One such source is Ozil and his performance against Chelsea indicates that he is ready to enjoy a rich goal return this coming year.
