Arsenal: Mesut Ozil Contract Must Lead To Alexis Sanchez Progress
Arsenal have agreed to a deal with Mesut Ozil per many reports. The impending completion of the deal must now lead to progress in talks with Alexis Sanchez.
The long-term future of Arsenal’s best two players has been up in the air for some time. With the club suffering from poor management of player’s contracts in the past, resulting in selling them for a lesser price, there was a fear that the same would happen once again. However, recent news suggests that the club has turned the corner.
Mesut Ozil is reportedly extremely close to signing a new mega deal with the Gunners, and although any details have not been released and an official announcement has not yet been made, the scenario has the feel of a when rather than if nature, with a signature imminent per many reports.
More from Pain in the Arsenal
With the impending completion of the deal, there is a positive atmosphere surrounding the club, added to by recent results including the weekend’s demolition of London rivals Chelsea. Consequently, with momentum building and fans seemingly pleased with results on and off the pitch, now is the perfect time to push on with negotiations with the other star of this squad.
Alexis Sanchez is another player with now less than two years remaining on his current deal. While that may seem like plenty of time to work with, the issue comes if talks stall to next summer. Then Arsenal are in a position of great weakness within negotiations due to the threat of losing Sanchez on a free just one year later. Pursuing clubs are acutely aware of this and consequently the price drops rather significantly.
Arsene Wenger cannot allow such a scenario to play out with Sanchez and needs to be decisive, deliberate and purposeful in talks with the Chilean international. Off the back of Ozil’s impending signing, Sanchez becomes the major priority this season and with the positive feeling surrounding the club, making hay with talks immediately would be a wise move.
The two were signed on the caveat that Wenger would match their ambition in the transfer window. Whether that has been done is a question that is perhaps yet to be answered. However, the aim for this season is undoubtedly the league title and Wenger has been able to assemble a squad capable of mounting a genuine challenge throughout the season.
Signing Sanchez to a long term is absolutely essential for the future of the club. Regressing back to the selling state of year’s previous would be devastating for the club and locking down the futures of their star players is a vital task for any top club. Arsenal are not alone in their quest to keep their best talent in house. Ozil and Sanchez are the very best at the Emirates. It’s one down, one to go for Wenger in these crunch time negotiations.
