Valencia have appointed Pako Ayestaran as their coach on a permanent basis.

The 53-year-old, brought to the club by Gary Neville, was placed in caretaker charge at the Mestalla in March following the sacking of the former Manchester United defender.

And after leading Valencia to a 12th-placed finish in the Primera Division, including overseeing impressive victories over Barcelona and Sevilla, Ayestaran has been rewarded with a contract until June 30 2018.

The Spaniard was Rafael Benitez's assistant during Valencia's title-winning season 12 years ago before following his colleague to Liverpool.
