Barcelona and France defender Jeremy Mathieu is set to be sidelined for up to two months after undergoing knee surgery, leaving his Euro 2016 hopes in serious doubt.

Mathieu suffered a torn meniscus during France's friendly win over Russia on Tuesday and went under the knife on Thursday.

A Barcelona statement read: "Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu has successfully undergone an operation on the meniscus injury in the right knee this Thursday by doctors Ramon Cugat and Ricard Pruna.

"The player will approximately be out for between six and eight weeks."

The injury means Mathieu could be absent for the remainder of the season as Barcelona chase a second successive treble of Champions League, Primera Division and Copa del Rey titles.

Barca's final league match is set for the weekend of May 14/15, with their Copa del Rey final against Sevilla being played the following weekend. The Champions League final is scheduled for May 28.

Mathieu is also facing a fight to be fit for Euro 2016 in his homeland this summer, with the opening match of the tournament taking place on June 10.

Mathieu has suggested he is hoping to be back a lot earlier than the worst-case scenario.

He wrote on his official Twitter account: "Thank you all for your messages and your support! See you in 4 weeks!!"
