Barcelona want to trade Douglas... for a basketball player

Published Aug. 1, 2016 5:23 p.m. ET

When Barcelona signed Douglas in 2014, the transfer mystified the soccer world at large. He was a 24-year-old uncapped right back, who, at the time, wasn't even the undisputed first choice for Sao Paulo. Flash forward to today, and the hapless Brazilian's only played eight matches for the club, and now they want to trade him... for a basketball player.

According to Sport, FC Barcelona's basketball team are close to signing American forward Adam Hanga from Laboral Kutxa. Laboral Kutxa are owned by Josea Querejeta, who also happens to own Deportivo Alaves, newly promoted to La Liga in Spain. As part of the deal, Querejeta requested a first-team player from Barcelona for Alaves, and Barcelona have reportedly wasted no time in offering Douglas up.

The jokes write themselves, but in all reality, it makes sense. Douglas isn't Barcelona-level quality -- he needs to find himself a new team, and he allegedly turned down a move back to his native Brazil in order to secure a Spanish passport. What better place to get his career back on track than at Alaves?

I wonder how good Douglas' jumper is though...
