Bellarabi's brace leads Leverkusen past Sporting

Published Feb. 25, 2016 3:18 p.m. ET

A brace from Karim Bellarabi was enough for Bayer Leverkusen to seal a place in the last 16 of the Europa League as they beat Sporting 3-1.

The German side held a slender one-goal advantage going back to the BayArena after Bellarabi's winner in Lisbon, and the lead was doubled as the winger fired the ball beneath the body of Rui Patricio after half an hour.

Joao Mario capitalized on a sloppy save from Bernd Leno to give the visitors a vital away goal less than 10 minutes later, but Leverkusen were always in control.

Bellarabi found space to rifle into the top corner after 65 minutes, before Hakan Calhanoglu volleyed into the roof of the net to emphatically send Roger Schmidt's side through to the next round.
