Big takes from Newcastle United's transfer deadline day

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

We have recapped the transfer deadline day for Newcastle United yesterday as well as going over the five players the club loaned out before the deadline arrived. What do we make of it?

I was expecting more from Rafa Benitez yesterday than what we saw. I was glad to see Emmanuel Riviere finally be taken off the books. I couldn’t be more happy to see Moussa Sissoko sold for the £30m Benitez demanded. I also couldn’t be more upset that all the club could nail was Christian Atsu’s loan.

Don’t get me wrong. Overall, when I start looking back on everything that happened in the transfer window, I’ll be giving great reviews. The talent purchased is strong, and the players sold were not needed for the club’s future. Newcastle did some of its best business this summer.

But on Wednesday, Sissoko was the only sale. And while it brought in £30m making the summer transfer window a profitable one, we still see Cheick Tiote with the club as well as injured Rob Elliot still unsure of his future with the club as well.

    Ending on a Cliffhanger

That’s exactly what happened Wednesday. The transfer window really has brought little closure to future of players. Will Rob Elliot remain with the club? Freddie Woodman remains with the club and was not sent on loan so where does he fall?

There must be disappointment  over Cheick Tiote’s failed medical at Galatasaray. What could have been a done deal was thrown off by poor fitness. It saddles us with the wages of Tiote. Perhaps the club can find another club willing to buy him or releasing him would be in their best interest.

This year’s transfer deadline day was a bit boring for me. While other clubs were out looking to make blockbuster moves and finalizing them, Newcastle United was out making loan deals.

I was also looking for the club to make a more permanent winger signing. Despite getting Christian Atsu on loan with an option to buy, I feel that the club could have made more significant moves.
