Bobby Wood scores brace to break U.S. Soccer record in Germany
After scoring a brace for 2. Bundesliga side Union Berlin, Bobby Wood added his name to the record books on Friday. The USMNT forward broke the record for goals scored by an American in a single season in Germany's top two flights.
Wood struck early and often in Union Berlin's rout against Paderborn. The native of Honolulu, Hawaii scored the opener in the 7th minute and had his brace in the 13th, good for goals 15 and 16 on the season.
The first came via a sizzling solo run through Paderborn's defense after an awful giveaway. Pure hustle on the counter contributed to the second, as Wood slipped behind a snoozing Paderborn back line to collect a deep lob, evade the pursuit and slam home past Daniel Heuer Fernandes.
The brace snapped Conor Casey's record of 14 goals scored, set with Karlsruher SC in the 2003-04 season in 2. Bundesliga.
Wood had his breakout for the USMNT last summer, notching game-winners in both a friendly vs. the Netherlands as well as Germany. With another impressive performance for Union Berlin, and reports of Bundesliga side Hamburger SV interested, the future is certainly bright for the young American.
