Borussia Dortmund Explodes for 5 Against Wolfsburg
The goals keep coming for Dortmund in the latest fixture of the new season.
In their third matchday of the 2016 Bundesliga season, Borussia Dortmund handedly dismantled league rivals Wolfsburg. It was the first meeting between the two since Dortmund fan favorite, and two time Bundesliga champion, Jakub Blaszczykowski left Die Schwartzgelben and joined the wolves over the summer.
The boys in black and yellow exploded for five goals on Tuesday, bringing their goal total to 17 goals in their last 3 competitive matches. The onslaught of scoring comes after the surprising loss to Bundesliga newcomers Red Bull Leipzig during matchday 2 of the season. The win temporarily had Dortmund alone atop the table, as Bayern wasn’t scheduled to play their week 3 match until the following day.
The scoring began with Raphael Guerreiro netting his first goal of the year. Aubameyang added a second shortly after in the 16th minute. The following half is when the real fun began and the goals came in droves.
Wolfsburg opened the second half with a goal of their own, giving the impression that this was going to be much more of a back and forth game than it ended up being. 5 minutes later French wonderkid Ousmane Dembele netted his first goal of the year, the first of many judging by his on pitch quality. Minutes later Aubameyang scored his second of the match and fourth of the young season. The scoring finished out with Polish defender Lukasz Piszczek getting in on the action and netting one in the 73rd minute.
The win is an important display of continued offensive quality as world class winger Marco Reus is still injured and not due back until next month. Such a convincing win if also significant as Wolfsburg is an opponent of much higher quality compared to the past two teams Dortmund fared so well against. A Champions League group stage fixture against Real Madrid looms next week. Hopefully the recent successes lead to high confidence and sees the squad continuing to gel further.
