Borussia Dortmund’s supporters go silent after fan dies during match

A Borussia Dortmund fan suffered a fatal heart attack while attending Sunday's Bundesliga match against Mainz and a second fan had to be resuscitated in another incident.

One man died inside the stadium despite efforts to revive him, while the other fan was "in a stable condition" in the hospital, Dortmund media director Sascha Fligge told The Associated Press.

News spread quickly through the crowd and Dortmund's fans in the south stand soon ceased their singing and chanting. The rest of the stadium followed suit, creating an near-silent atmosphere at one of Europe's most famous venues.

The club later released a statement on Twitter:

Translated, the statement reads:

"During the game two tragic incidents occurred in the stadium in which two fans had to be revived. One person unfortunately didn't make it and has died. We are full of grief and our thoughts are with the families. From the hospital we have received news that the second person is apparently in stable condition."

After the final whistle, the players all lined up and sang an emotional rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" with fans.
