Bremen rules USMNT forward Johannsson out for rest of season
Werder Bremen has said that U.S. international forward Aron Johannsson will remain sidelined for the rest of the season with hip and groin problems.
Johannsson, 25, has not played since Sept. 22 and will end his debut season in Bremen with six league appearances and two goals. He joined Werder Bremen from Dutch side AZ in the offseason.
"We have written Aron off for this season," Werder Bremen CEO Thomas Eichin told Bild. "We no longer plan with him this season.
"It's a difficult situation for him," Eichin said, and added that the injury "can't be treated that easily and a prognosis is difficult."
Johannsson had hip surgery in October and was expected back in early 2016, but the striker has suffered setbacks which have now ended his season entirely. His team has insisted it will stick with him, however.
"Aron still has a lot of time," Eichin said. "He's under contract until 2019."
The Icelandic-American striker will hope to return next season to a team still in the German top flight. Bremen currently sits just one point outside of the relegation zone with seven league games remaining.
