HANNOVER, Germany --

Struggling Bundesliga club Hannover has appointed Thomas Schaaf, who previously managed Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt, as its new coach.

Hannover announced on Monday that it has given Schaaf a contract through the end of next season. He replaces Michael Frontzeck, who resigned at the start of the German league's winter break.

Hannover is next-to-last in the Bundesliga standings, one point above Hoffenheim.

The 54-year-old Schaaf was Bremen's coach from 1999 until 2013, winning the 2004 Bundesliga title and three German Cups. He took over at Frankfurt in 2014 but quit in May after falling out with the club's board.
