Casillas becomes joint-most capped player in European football history
Iker Casillas admits his retirement is getting closer after becoming the joint-most capped player in European football history.
The 34-year-old won his 166th cap for Spain on Sunday in a goalless draw with Romania at the Cluj Arena.
Only six players have played more international games than Casillas, but he acknowledges that his time at the top is running out.
"I am happy to reach 166 games and be the player with the most games for the national team," he said on Periscope. "In these years I have lived good times and bad times, but I will stick with the good ones.
"The time of my retirement is getting closer and closer. It's clear that time passes everyone and I am no exception of that.
"But I have hope and I would like to be with this team full of youngsters. I don't know if it's my last year with Spain, I only think about enjoying each day."
Casillas' first appearance at a major tournament was at the 2002 World Cup, but he faces competition from Manchester United's David de Gea and Sevilla's Sergio Rico for the starting spot at Euro 2016.
"[Vicente] Del Bosque will call up the 23 players that he thinks are the best," said the former Real Madrid keeper. "[Rico] is a great keeper who has worked hard and will get his chance with the national team."
