Reaction to the new format of the EFL Trophy has been overwhelmingly negative. Originally open to the 48 sides in the bottom two tiers of the EFL, supporters of those sides are not happy with the inclusion of development teams.
Nonetheless, this is a great opportunity for Chelsea to give some of their youngsters competitive football. Given that these individuals have not been enrolled in the loan army, the Checkatrade Trophy will provide them with the most fierce competition this season.
Chelsea’s player to watch this evening will be Mason Mount. The 17-year-old is one of the more exciting talents in the youth ranks. Meanwhile, Fikayo Tomori will line up in defence. Many will remember that the Canadian made his first-team debut against Leicester City last season. Tomori signed a four-year deal this summer and will be used as one of the more senior heads in this tournament.
After an unbeaten start to their Premier League 2 campaign, Viveash’s charges will be eager to show that they belong in this cup. Swindon will be keen to avoid an embarrassing defeat so expect a competitive encounter.
Those with a Chelsea TV subscription will be able to watch the game live. Kick-off at the County Ground is at 19:45 BST, 14:45 ET.
