David Bingham replaces Brad Guzan on USMNT roster for upcoming qualifiers
David Bingham has been added to the United States' roster for their World Cup qualifiers against Honduras (March 24, 10:30 p.m. ET on FS1) and Panama. The goalkeeper replaces Brad Guzan, whose wife is expected to give birth in the coming days.
Guzan was the Americans' starting goalkeeper from the fall of 2014 through the summer of 2015. After that, he spent the next 18 months alternating with Tim Howard. But all of that was under Jurgen Klinsmann.
Bruce Arena hadn't indicated who his starting goalkeeper would be since taking over as U.S. boss in November. Howard appeared the likely pick for the upcoming qualifiers because he's returned from injury and taken his spot as the Colorado Rapids' No. 1, while Guzan has spent most of this season on the bench for Middlesbrough. Now that Guzan is out for these two matches, it will almost assuredly be Howard in goal for the U.S., although Arena has spoken highly of Nick Rimando, making him an outside choice.
Bingham was with the U.S. for January camp, so Arena got a first hand look at the San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper. Arena is also familiar with Bingham from his time as LA Galaxy manager. With Guzan, Howard and Rimando all 32 or older, the 27-year-old Bingham appears to be Arena's top younger goalkeeper choice, at least for now.
