David Gold Looking At Introducing Safe Standing At London Stadium

As mentioned in previous articles, the issue of standing at the London Stadium is not one that’s going away. However at West Ham we do have some decent owners, despite what some people will have you believe. David Gold announced yesterday on twitter that he was in talks to implement safe standing at the Olympic Stadium.

West Ham’s Plan

Despite the fact he announced it in the third person, I’m glad it’s been started. Sitting at a football game is alright for some but not for others, and all should be catered for. It was only the poor management of such areas that allowed tragedies to occur which stopped standing areas being a normal part of every top stadium.

Standing areas will remove conflict of standers v non-standers in the home fans, as it will give a place for those who like to stand to do so without anyone being obstructed and those in seated areas to be sure that they won’t have their view ruined.

Introducing Safe Standing will also pacify those who feel the new stadium has made the atmosphere worse. Show by recent games at Celtic, it really makes the atmosphere electric to have a section standing and singing. Without the infighting or removal by means of stewards that is anyway.

    Problems

The Premier League. It is currently against Premier League rules to have any standing section. It’s even within their rules to have people ejected due to persistent standing.

Whilst Gold may have started talks, it’s not going to be this season that we see any sections. Maybe with the movement in Celtic and the common clamour for the facility then we can see some movement for the next season or the one after, some definite plans being put in place would certainly calm those angry at the current rules.

I worry that the big wigs at the top of the game could hold it back. Why have more standing when you could have more corporate boxes? They’re perfect game doesn’t rely on atmosphere, just loads of people sitting nicely, all sipping wine and champagne. But maybe fan power can with the day on this one?

What do you think? How much progress will there be?
