David Moyes: Tottenham are a Club People Want to Watch

Tottenham have been trending upwards these past couple of seasons under the guidance of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Perhaps in a bit of gamesmanship, Sunderland manager David Moyes is praising Tottenham prior to the Black Cats’ visit to White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Not to take away from his side’s poor start (currently 19th in the league table), Moyes is saying all the right things that the Tottenham faithful have noticed since Mauricio Pochettino took over in May 2014 — Spurs have been trending upwards.

Though, Moyes is quick to point out that when people are watching Tottenham, not only is it based on the fact that Pochettino gives youngsters a chance. But it’s also heavily influenced by giving England five key players that have become a core group moving forward.

“We’ve all been impressed by Tottenham. They’ve become a club that people want to watch,” David Moyes told Sunderland’s official website (via Evening Standard).

“And I think it’s because of the England situation. They’ve got one or two good English players.”

“Our media in this country wants England to do well, which is correct, and wants them to have good young players.”

“Tottenham have got that. That’s what has made Tottenahm a side that a lot of people are hoping do well.”

It seems that Moyes may have forgotten what Mauricio Pochettino has done since taking over as Spurs’ manager, but he managed to mention that at the end of his conversation.

“I might go against the grain and say I thought they were a little bit unlucky against Monaco. It could have gone the other way for them,” Davy Moyes added.

“They are title challengers – they’ll be close.”

“The squad they’ve got, the players they’ve got and the club they’ve got there demands that they’re always close.”

Last season’s third-place finish exceeded everyone’s expectations as Spurs weren’t mentioned as a title contender. But if one were to look at the Argentine’s previous three seasons since he arrived in the Premier League, his teams have gotten better each year.

That eventually challenging for a league title was bound to happen.

Following a respectable fifth-place finish in Pochettino’s first season as Spurs’ manager (his second year in the Premier League), Pochettino has seen his side climb up the table in the past three seasons when you include his one-year stint with Southampton.

The Saints ended their 2013-14 campaign in eighth place. A year later, Spurs now managed by Mauricio Pochettino, finished in fifth. Last season, Spurs dropped to third, but still had a higher finish than their previous campaign.

This season, Tottenham are now being considered for the Premier League title, though they’re still not being talked about as much.

So far, more eyes are starting to follow the North London club as Mauricio Pochettino continues to lead his squad up the table, but if they’re being overlooked, that wouldn’t bother them either.
